KOTA KINABALU, SABAH — A total of 2,000 mooncakes were distributed by Thonny Chee Initiative (TCI) to communities across Kota Kinabalu in conjunction with the 2026 Mid-Autumn Festival.
Through this initiative, TCI aims to convey a message of togetherness, appreciation and care for the local community, regardless of race or religion.
The mooncakes were also presented to several community centres serving senior citizens, including the Pusat Aktiviti Warga Emas (PAWE) Likas, Pusat Aktiviti Warga Emas (PAWE) UTC Kota Kinabalu, and the Persatuan Kecergasan dan Pembangunan Orang Tua Kota Kinabalu (KOAT) in Luyang.
In addition to the community centres, a portion of the mooncakes was also distributed to shops lot and premises around Kota Kinabalu, particularly in areas such as Damai and its surrounding neighbourhoods, which have an active Chinese community that celebrates the festival.
For TCI, festive celebrations are more than just an annual tradition. They provide an opportunity for people to share joy, appreciate cultural diversity and strengthen relationships within the community.
The involvement of senior citizens also reflects TCI’s attention to a community that remains an important part of the development of society. Through initiatives such as this, TCI seeks to bring the festive spirit closer to members of the community, regardless of their background.
In a city home to people of diverse ethnicities and cultures, the Mid-Autumn Festival also provides an opportunity to celebrate the diversity that forms an integral part of Sabah’s identity.
The distribution of 2,000 mooncakes also reflects TCI’s approach to carrying out community initiatives by engaging directly with local communities, from community centres to business premises and neighbourhood areas.
Through this initiative, TCI hopes that this year’s Mid-Autumn Festival can be celebrated in a more meaningful way, while continuing to foster values of togetherness, mutual appreciation and care for the community.
Two thousand mooncakes may be just a number, but each one represents an effort by TCI to remain close to the local community and share the joy of the festive season with people regardless of race or religion.
